Stop Treating Fab UEFN Source Assets as a Finished Island - 2026

Stop treating a Fab UEFN source asset as a finished island. An October 15 2026 license is not a publish, and 88 percent applies only to work you can sell.

Stop Treating Fab UEFN Source Assets as a Finished Island - 2026

Pixel art robot with a stop sign beside a Fab monitor crossing out an island

Stop treating a Fab checkout as a finished island. October 15, 2026 let you license UEFN source assets that open in the editor. Epic’s announcement calls them editable systems. The v42.40 notes repeat that sentence. Neither post says the listing is your game.

The refusal is PACK_IS_ISLAND. If the only new thing in the project is someone else’s UI kit, arrow trail, or environment, you do not have an island ready to publish. You have a library item. The what-changed map already explains source assets versus reference files, the free Verse UI Kit, and the 88 percent seller share. This page owns the ship decision.

Direct answer: Read the license, add the asset to a copy project, and change something that is yours. Publish only after the island’s own gates are done. Until the license is a sentence you can say out loud, the decision is HOLD.

Why this matters now

The announcement is easy to misread because it is generous. Systems open in UEFN. You edit them immediately. A free kit from Epic is on the store the same day. Environment packs are described as something you drop into a project so you can start on gameplay. “Start on gameplay” is the opposite of “gameplay is included.”

Teams will still try the shortcut. Checkout at lunch, publish before dinner, and call the bowling alley, the office, or the example settings screen the island. That shortcut fails in three different places at once. The license may not allow what you think. The Creator Portal still wants an age-rating questionnaire and moderation. Starting October 22, portrait thumbnails, landscape thumbnails, and a logo are required to publish or update an island. A Fab pack does not generate those files.

PACK_IS_ISLAND feels fast because the editor opens. Fast is not the same as allowed, and it is not the same as complete.

Who this is for

Reader What you leave with
Beginners Three decisions, and why a free kit is still not a game
Developers The list of gates a source asset does not clear
Creators A devlog line that does not claim the pack is the island
Companies Who may check out, who may publish, and who may relist

Time: 20 minutes to pick COPY_EDIT, SHIP_LATER, or HOLD. Filling the license sentence is part of those 20 minutes. Building the actual loop is not.

Prerequisites: the listing page and a project that is not already in the publish flow. You do not need the October 16 livestream to refuse this shortcut. The livestream shows a round trip of building, publishing, and licensing a source asset. It is not a certificate that your checkout is a shippable island.

The only three decisions

Decision When it is honest What you do
COPY_EDIT You want to learn the asset or restyle it License it into a project you can delete. Do not publish
SHIP_LATER The island already has your loop, and this asset is one system inside it Publish only after the gates below are checked
HOLD You have not read the restrictions, or the pack is the only content Do not check out a paid listing. Do not open Publish

PACK_IS_ISLAND is the click this table blocks. It looks like SHIP_LATER and it has the evidence of a download. The project contains a furnished room or an example menu. There is no rule that is yours. The Discover art is last month’s screenshot. Someone saw “drop straight into a project” and treated the project as the product.

Epic’s own line for the Verse UI Kit is narrower than a launch. Use it as is, restyle it, or open it to see how the Verse works. “As is” means the widgets can stay. It does not mean the example settings panel is a game people should play tonight.

What a license is, and what it is not

The announcement’s checkout is three steps. Find the asset on Fab or in the Fab window inside UEFN. Review the licensing details and restrictions, select the license, and check out. The asset lands in your Fab library and stays there. Then you add it to a project and edit.

Step two is the permission. Step three is a file in a project. Publish is a later button in the Creator Portal, on an island, with moderation in front of players. Those are different tools. A file that stays in a Fab library has not been offered to players at all.

Write the permission in one sentence before COPY_EDIT or SHIP_LATER. A usable sentence names the listing and the limit.

Verse UI Kit, Epic, free checkout on this account. We may use and restyle it in our island. We may not relist it as our Fab product unless the license says so.

If you cannot write the sentence, you have not finished step two. HOLD. A paid Pathfinder listing or a Dexsoft environment needs its own sentence, because the announcement labels only the Verse UI Kit as free. The other names in the post are examples. Their prices and restrictions are on their listings, not in the blog recap.

“We edited it a lot” is not a substitute for that sentence. Epic’s seller rule is separate and stricter. Only publish work you made or have the rights to sell. Restyling Epic’s widgets for your island can be inside the use they described. Uploading those widgets as your source asset is a sale. Eighty-eight percent of a sale you are not allowed to make is not a business model. It is a takedown with a revenue share attached.

Fab reviews seller listings for UEFN technical standards before those listings go public. That review is about the marketplace item. It is not a review of your island, and it is not a waiver of the license you clicked. Passing Fab’s technical check as a seller, someday, still requires the rights line. Buying someone else’s passed listing does not transfer their authorship to you.

Gates a source asset does not clear

Use this list when someone says the island is done because the pack is in the project. Every row has to be true for SHIP_LATER. Any blank row is HOLD or COPY_EDIT, not publish.

Gate Why the pack does not clear it
License sentence Restrictions are per listing. The announcement tells you to read them at checkout
Your loop A UI kit, an arrow trail, or a room is not rules, scoring, or a reason to stay
Your Verse or devices on top Editable means you can change it. It does not mean the example is the design
Fab seat The library stays on the account that checked out. A teammate’s UEFN login is not automatically that seat
Memory v42.40 does not raise the publish budget. A later label of 300 MB is the same budget that reads as 100,000 units today
IARC The questionnaire now sits in the Creator Portal before moderation. A kit does not answer it
Discover files From October 22, portrait thumbnails, landscape thumbnails, and a logo are required to publish or update. The thumbnail lock is that checklist
Rights to resell 88 percent applies when you sell work you made or have the rights to sell. A license to use is not that right by default

The Discover row is a date, not a vibe. v42.40 says players are already starting to see a redesigned Discover, in phases, with autoplay video and new tile shapes. The required files are how your island shows up on those surfaces. An environment pack can look good in a capture. The capture is still something you export, crop, and upload. The promoting-your-island docs are the place for that marketing work. This page will not pretend a Fab license schedules it.

IARC is the same kind of gate. v42.40 moved the questionnaire into the Creator Portal so you are not sent out to the IARC site. You still complete it when you publish, before moderation, and ratings still land on the Ratings tab. If an update changes your answers, you retake it for that version. Dropping a new environment into a live island can change what the questionnaire should say. “We only added a Fab pack” is not a reason to skip the retake if the content changed.

Memory is the quiet gate. “Production-ready” in the announcement means the environment is built to be used, not that it is free against the budget. Profile the copy. If the pack alone crosses the line, SHIP_LATER is unavailable until you cut geometry or you do not use the pack. Do not discover that on the publish click of the live island.

COPY_EDIT, in practice

This is the decision for the week of the announcement if you have not shipped with a source asset before.

  1. Duplicate the project or start a throwaway one. The live island stays untouched.
  2. Open the listing. Read the restrictions. Write the one sentence.
  3. Check out only if the sentence is true. Free still gets this step. The Verse UI Kit is the right first listing because the price is zero and Epic already described the allowed uses.
  4. Add it to the copy. Change one thing you can see. A button label, an arrow color, a moved wall.
  5. Do not publish the copy. Do not upload the result to Fab.

Success looks boring. The copy opens. The live island’s publish button was never involved. The Fab library shows the asset on the account that paid or accepted the free license.

Failure looks like productivity. The live project now depends on widgets that exist only in one person’s library. Other developers pull the project and the UI is missing. Or the example menu is the only menu, and someone queued a publish because the screenshot looked like a game. That is PACK_IS_ISLAND with extra steps. Revert the live project. Repeat on a copy.

The Fab plugin engine-version help page is for a different break. A downloaded Unreal or Unity plugin that will not load is not this refusal. UEFN source assets are supposed to open in UEFN. If they do not open, you still do not publish around the failure by screenshotting the Fab page.

SHIP_LATER, and the thing that must be yours

SHIP_LATER is allowed when the pack is a part. The test is whether a player can describe your island without naming the pack.

A bowling alley that is only a bowling alley you licensed is the pack. A bowling alley where your Verse tracks frames, your UI kit is restyled, and your rules are not the example screen can be an island. The alley is the set. The rules are yours. Write the rules down before you publish, in the same ticket as the license sentence.

Pathfinder is a cleaner example because the surface is small. An arrow that leads to a prop is a hint. The quest that decides the next prop, the reward, and the failure is yours. If the ticket says “we added Pathfinder” and nothing else, you are still on the pack. COPY_EDIT until the quest exists.

The older Fab search and licensing piece is about choosing environment packs with your eyes open. It is not a permission slip to publish the pack as the product. Use it when you are comparing rooms. Use this page when someone wants to press Publish the day the room arrives.

Economy math stays in its own article. The UEFN economy explainer is about island payouts. Eighty-eight percent is a Fab sale of a developer-facing system. Do not add those percentages in one cell and call the sum your forecast. A finished island, in the sense of this refusal, is a player-facing publish. A source-asset sale is a different storefront. You can do both later. You cannot do the second by uploading the first’s licensed files.

What you may say in public

Decision Sentence that matches it
HOLD We are not publishing from a Fab source asset this week. The license is not read yet
COPY_EDIT The Verse UI Kit is in a copy project. The live island is unchanged
SHIP_LATER The island’s rules are ours. The licensed system is one part, and Discover plus IARC are still on the list
Never We shipped a finished island by licensing a Fab pack
Never We are selling Epic’s UI kit. The share is 88 percent

The last two sentences are how PACK_IS_ISLAND shows up in a devlog. Players and Epic both read devlogs. “Finished” is a claim about your game. “Selling” is a claim about rights. The announcement supports neither claim just because checkout succeeded.

If you need a shorter paste for a team channel, use this. Fab UEFN source assets are editable systems, not a finished island. We read the license, we edit on a copy, and we do not relist work we do not own.

Governance when more than one person has Publish

Control Rule
Who may check out The Fab account that will still exist when the project needs the asset again
Who reads the license A second person, before a paid listing is added to the live project
Who may publish the island The person who can point at the loop that is not the pack
Who may list a source asset for sale The person who can say “we made this” or can point at a license that allows the sale
What 88 percent is not Permission, a grant, or your island payout

A studio that buys on a personal credit card and then loses the seat has not lost Verse. It has lost the library entry the announcement says stays after checkout. Put the account name in the ticket next to the license sentence. That is dull and it prevents a weekend outage.

Fab’s technical review, when you are the seller, can reject or delay a listing even if the rights are clean. Do not promise a customer a date that assumes the review is instant. Do not submit a listing to “see what happens” with Epic’s example widgets renamed. The review is not a confessional that converts someone else’s work into yours.

If you already published the pack

Recovery is not a second checkout.

  1. Say whether players received an island whose only new content is the licensed system. If yes, you did PACK_IS_ISLAND. Write that down so the next patch is not another pack.
  2. Read the license now, even though checkout already happened. If the live island violates it, unpublish or replace the content. Do not wait for a strike to be the first reader.
  3. Check Discover art and IARC against the version that is live. October 22 does not forgive an update that still lacks the required images. A retake of the questionnaire matters if the new rooms changed the answers.
  4. Do not “fix” a rights problem by publishing the same files as your own Fab listing. That repeats the violation on a second storefront and drags the 88 percent line into it.
  5. Move further experiments to a copy. The live project is now a supported game, not a lab.

The Verse and UEFN resource list is where you go when the next step is learning to replace the example Verse with yours. It is not a ship button either.

Common shapes of the same mistake

Publishing the Verse UI Kit examples as the menu of record. Epic invited you to use them, restyle them, or read them. Players still need a game on the other side of the menu. An example settings panel with no settings you authored is a demo of the kit.

Calling a drop-in environment the 1.0. The announcement says you can start on gameplay instead of building the world from scratch. Gameplay is the part you skipped if the patch notes are only “added the bowling alley.”

Relisting a restyle. Color changes are not authorship of the system. The seller rule is “work you made or have the rights to sell.” Get the rights in writing from the license, or do not list.

Skipping restrictions because the price was zero. Free is a price. The review-the-license step is still step two.

Assuming every pack named in the news post is free. Only the Verse UI Kit is labeled free there. HOLD on a paid listing until the sentence includes the price and the restriction.

Treating Fab’s listing review as your moderation pass. Sellers get a technical standards check. Your island gets Creator Portal moderation and an age rating. Different queues.

Ignoring October 22 because the pack “has screenshots.” Screenshots on a Fab listing are the seller’s marketing. Your island needs its own portrait, landscape, and logo files when that requirement turns on.

Adding the pack on the live project first. COPY_EDIT exists so a bad fit never touches the build players have. The library makes it easy to add the asset again later, on purpose.

What this page will not decide

It will not re-explain every field in the Verse UI Kit. That is the what-changed article. It will not walk a first checkout click by click on a throwaway project. It will not spec every Discover thumbnail pixel. The October 22 requirement is a gate in the table above, and the promoting docs are the spec.

It will not tell you that source assets are a bad idea. They are a good way to stop rebuilding a dialog box or a quest arrow. The opinion is narrower. Stop calling the licensed system a finished island, and stop selling it as yours unless the license says you can.

Key takeaways

  • Refuse PACK_IS_ISLAND. A Fab checkout on October 15, 2026 is a library item, not a launch.
  • Choose COPY_EDIT, SHIP_LATER, or HOLD. Unread restrictions are HOLD.
  • Epic’s steps are review the license, check out, then add the asset to a project and edit. Publish is not one of those steps.
  • The Verse UI Kit may be used, restyled, or read. That is not the same as shipping the example screens as your game.
  • Only the UI kit is labeled free in the announcement. Other named packs need their own price and license sentence.
  • 88 percent is for selling a source asset you made or have the rights to sell. A use license is not that right by default.
  • The memory budget did not increase to fit a “production-ready” room. Profile the copy.
  • IARC still happens in the Creator Portal before moderation. A pack does not answer it.
  • From October 22, portrait, landscape, and logo files are required to publish or update. A Fab listing does not supply your island’s files.
  • The Fab account that checked out is the library. Write that account down.
  • If you already published the pack as the whole island, read the license now and stop relisting those files.

FAQ

Is a UEFN source asset on Fab a finished island?

No. Epic describes source assets as editable systems you open in UEFN, such as UI, vehicles, weapons, AI, or environments. Your island still needs your rules, a license you understand, and the usual publish gates.

Can I publish the free Verse UI Kit as my game?

You can use it, restyle it, or read the Verse, which is what Epic said. Publishing a project that is only the example screens is the shortcut this page refuses. Players need a game on the other side of the widgets.

Does 88 percent mean I should upload the kit I licensed?

No. That share applies when you sell work you made or have the rights to sell. Relisting someone else’s system, including a restyle you do not have rights to sell, breaks the rule in the same announcement.

Do I still need Discover thumbnails if the pack includes pictures?

Yes, when you publish or update on or after October 22. v42.40 requires portrait thumbnails, landscape thumbnails, and a logo for your island. Marketing images on the Fab listing are not those uploads.

What if I already published?

Read the license against what players received. If the island violates it, remove or replace that content. Do not publish the same files as your own Fab product. Put any further edits on a copy.

Does Fab’s review of the listing clear my island?

No. Fab checks seller listings for UEFN technical standards before they are published on Fab. Your island still goes through Creator Portal moderation, and the IARC questionnaire still sits in that flow.

Is a drop-in environment enough to call the version 1.0?

Only if your gameplay is real and the other gates are checked. Epic’s line is that you can start on gameplay instead of building the world first. The gameplay is still your work.

What should I do this week if I have not read a license?

HOLD on paid listings. If you want to learn the editor path, COPY_EDIT the free Verse UI Kit on a project you can delete, and do not press Publish. The blanks are the first indie Fab lab.

What to do next

Open the listing you almost published and write one sentence about what it allows. If the sentence is missing, do not publish and do not buy.

If the sentence is clear and the live island does not depend on the asset yet, COPY_EDIT on a duplicate. SHIP_LATER starts when you can name the rule, the score, or the session that is yours, and when Discover and IARC are on the same checklist as the Fab seat.

Share the three-row decision table with anyone who has the Creator Portal publish button. The Fab window is new. The mistake of calling a download a game is not.
