UEFN Source Asset First Indie Fab Lab Worksheet 2026
![]()
This is a fill-in uefn source asset lab. You will license one free listing, Epic’s Verse UI Kit, into a UEFN project that is not the island you publish, change one widget, and stop.
On October 15, 2026 Epic opened UEFN source assets on Fab. The announcement says you find the asset, review the license, check out, and add it to a project so you can edit it. The v42.40 notes repeat that these are editable systems, not reference files. The Verse UI Kit is the free Epic example. Buttons, toggles, sliders, tabs, toasts, and sample screens come with Verse you can open.
The what-changed map explains the listing type and the 88 percent seller share. The finished-island refusal explains why a checkout is not a launch. This page is the blank form between those two. You do not buy Pathfinder. You do not buy an environment pack. You do not press Publish. You do not upload the kit to Fab as your product.
Result: a copy project with one edited widget from the free kit, a license sentence in your own words, and a publish button you did not click. Time: 60 to 80 minutes if UEFN is already installed. Refuse: paid listings, the live island, and a Fab upload.
Why this matters now
The three license steps are short enough to do on the wrong project. Checkout puts the asset in your Fab library, where it stays. Adding it to a project is a second click. Publish is a third habit, especially if that project is already in the Creator Portal queue. October 22 adds another reason not to wander into Publish. Portrait thumbnails, landscape thumbnails, and a logo become required to publish or update an island. The Discover thumbnail lock is that date. This lab does not create those files, and it should not be the day you discover the portal wants them.
A first lab on the free kit answers a different question. Can you read a restriction, land a file in the library, and edit it in a disposable project? If that loop is confusing, a paid room will be worse. The price of this lesson is zero only if the listing you open is actually the free kit. Confirm the price before you check out. The announcement labels the Verse UI Kit free. It does not label every other name in the post free.
Direct answer: Sections A through F. Copy the blanks into a ticket. Stop when Section E says the live island was not modified and Publish was not clicked.
Who fills this in
| Reader | Done when… |
|---|---|
| Beginners | The copy project and the live island are different names on the page |
| Developers | One widget label or color changed, and the Verse file you opened is named |
| Creators | You can say “we did not publish” without hedging |
| Companies | The receipt names the Fab account and a publish value of no |
If you do not have a second project, create an empty one before Section C. Do not “just use the live island this once.” That is how a lab becomes the menu players see.
Decision before Section A
| Latch | Meaning | This worksheet |
|---|---|---|
| LAB_COPY | Free Verse UI Kit only, on a copy, unpublished, not relisted | Pass |
| LIVE_ISLAND | The asset was added to the project you ship, or you published | Fail |
| HOLD | You cannot find the free kit, or the price is not zero | Stop. No checkout |
LAB_COPY is the only pass. A paid checkout can be a later decision, after this form is honest. It is not a substitute when the free kit is sold out of your patience. HOLD is cheaper than a bowling alley you have not read.
Section A — Two projects and one account (fill in)
Write these down before you open Fab. The live island is the one players can already join, or the one you plan to submit this month. The copy is anything else.
| Blank | Your value |
|---|---|
| A1. Live island project name | |
| A2. Live island code, if it already has one | |
| A3. Copy project name | |
| A4. Are A1 and A3 different? | yes / no |
| A5. Fab account email or team seat that will own the library | |
| A6. You can open the Fab window inside UEFN, or fab.com, on that account | yes / no |
Pass: A4 is yes, A6 is yes, A5 is a real seat your team will still have next month. The announcement says the asset stays in your Fab library after checkout. A personal login that nobody else can use is a bad seat for a later paid pack. It is acceptable for this free lab if you write the address down. It is not acceptable to leave A5 blank.
Fail: A3 is blank and UEFN is already open on A1. Close the live project. Create the copy. The Verse guide will not choose a project for you.
Success check: you can point at A1 and A3 and they are not the same file.
Section B — Find the free kit, and stop if it is not free (fill in)
Search for the Verse UI Kit from Epic. Use the Fab window in UEFN or the site. Read the seller name. Epic’s post describes a free collection of UMG widgets and Verse classes, with example screens and a helper library. If the listing in front of you is Pathfinder, an environment pack, or any price above zero, you are in the wrong lab.
| Blank | Your value |
|---|---|
| B1. Listing title as shown | |
| B2. Seller | |
| B3. Price shown before checkout | |
| B4. Is B3 zero? | yes / no |
| B5. Does the listing mention widgets, Verse, or example screens? | yes / no |
| B6. You opened a paid pack “just to look” and the checkout button is one click away | yes / no |
Pass: B4 is yes and B2 is Epic (or the seller name Epic’s own post uses for this kit). B5 is yes.
Fail B4: latch HOLD. Do not complete checkout to “see the flow” on a paid SKU. The flow is the same shape. The invoice is not. Come back to this section with the free kit.
Fail B6 if you already paid: write the amount in Section F and stop. Do not add that pack to the live island to justify the spend. This worksheet does not have a section for environments.
Success check: B3 is 0 and you have not pressed the pay button on any other listing in this sitting.
Section C — One license sentence (fill in)
Epic’s second step is to review the licensing details and restrictions, select the license you need, and check out. This section is that review. Checkout is Section D, and it waits.
Open the restrictions on the Verse UI Kit. Write one sentence a teammate can check against the listing. The sentence must say what you may do in an island and whether you may sell the kit as your own Fab product. Epic’s announcement allows using the kit, restyling it, or opening it to see how the Verse works. It also says you may only publish source assets you made or have the rights to sell. If the listing is stricter than the blog post, the listing wins. If you cannot tell, HOLD.
| Blank | Your value |
|---|---|
| C1. License sentence, in your words | |
| C2. May you use it inside an island you publish later? | yes / no / unclear |
| C3. May you upload it, or a recolor, as your own Fab listing? | yes / no / unclear |
| C4. If C2 or C3 is unclear, did you check out anyway? | must be no |
| C5. You compared the listing with the October 15 post, and the listing wins on any conflict | yes |
Pass: C1 is a real sentence, C3 is no unless the listing explicitly allows a resale, and C4 is no.
Fail: C1 is “it’s free so it’s fine.” Free is the price. It is not the grant of rights. The 88 percent share is for sellers of work they made or have the rights to sell. It is not a reward for uploading Epic’s widgets.
Success check: another person can read C1 without opening Fab and know whether a later relist is allowed. For this lab the expected C3 is no.
Section D — Checkout into the library only (fill in)
If Section C passed, check out the free license. Confirm the asset appears in the Fab library on account A5. Do not add it to a project in this section. The split is the lesson. Library and project are different. The announcement lists them as separate steps.
| Blank | Your value |
|---|---|
| D1. Checkout completed | yes / no |
| D2. Library shows the Verse UI Kit on account A5 | yes / no |
| D3. Amount charged | 0 |
| D4. You added the asset to a project during checkout | no |
| D5. Time you stopped and looked at the library |
Pass: D1 and D2 are yes, D3 is 0, D4 is no.
Fail D3: you bought something else. Stop. Do not hide the receipt. Fail D4: note which project received the asset. If it was A1, the latch is already LIVE_ISLAND. Remove it from the live project before you continue, if the editor lets you remove an unused add. If you already placed widgets in the live level, get a second person before you delete anything players depend on. This lab assumes you have not published that add.
Success check: the library contains the kit and both UEFN projects look as they did at the start of Section A.
Section E — Copy project, one edit, then leave (fill in)
Open project A3 only. Add the Verse UI Kit from your library. Find one example widget or one example screen. Change a single visible thing. A button label, a color, or a toast string. Save the copy. Do not open project A1. Do not publish. Do not open a Fab upload flow.
Epic’s kit includes example screens with Verse behind them and a helper library. Opening one Verse file is enough to prove the asset is source and not a locked reference. You are not rewriting the helper library tonight. You are not restyling a full menu. One edit proves you can edit.
| Blank | Your value |
|---|---|
| E1. Project you added the kit to | must be A3 |
| E2. Widget or screen you opened | |
| E3. The one change you made | |
| E4. Verse file name you opened, if you opened one | |
| E5. Live project A1 modified in this sitting | no |
| E6. Creator Portal publish clicked | no |
| E7. Fab “publish your own asset” or upload started | no |
| E8. Discover thumbnail files created in this sitting | no |
Pass: E1 is A3, E3 is specific, E5 through E8 are no.
Fail E5 or E6: latch LIVE_ISLAND. Write what changed on the live project. Do not “finish” by publishing so the experiment is at least consistent. Unpublished damage on a copy is the point. Published damage is the other article.
Fail E7: stop the upload. A recolor of Epic’s kit is not your source asset unless C3 was an explicit yes. This lab expected C3 to be no.
E8 stays no on purpose. Thumbnail work is a different ticket with a date of October 22. Mixing it into this hour is how neither job finishes.
Success check: you can close UEFN. The copy contains one deliberate change. The live island does not.
Section F — Latch and the sentence you keep (fill in)
| Blank | Your value |
|---|---|
| F1. Latch | LAB_COPY / LIVE_ISLAND / HOLD |
| F2. One sentence | |
| F3. Date | |
| F4. Fab account from A5 | |
| F5. Will anyone publish A1 today | no |
F2 must include the copy project name, the words Verse UI Kit, and the word unpublished. A usable sentence:
LAB_COPY on project SandboxUI: Verse UI Kit checked out at price 0 on the studio Fab seat, one button label changed, A1 untouched, Publish not clicked.
Fail the sentence if it names a paid pack, if it says the live island now depends on the kit, or if it says you listed the kit for sale.
If F1 is HOLD, say why in F2. “Price was not zero” is a complete reason. “Could not understand the resale line” is a complete reason. “Wanted the bowling alley” is a reason to stay on HOLD until this form passes on the free kit.
Gates you can paste above the ticket
| Gate | Pass condition |
|---|---|
| G1 | Copy project and live island are different |
| G2 | The listing is the Epic Verse UI Kit and the price is 0 |
| G3 | A license sentence exists, and resale is no unless the listing says yes |
| G4 | The kit is in the Fab library on a named account |
| G5 | The kit was added only to the copy |
| G6 | Exactly one visible edit, and you can name it |
| G7 | Publish was not clicked |
| G8 | No Fab upload of the kit or the recolor |
A lead can read G2, G5, G7, and G8 in a stand-up. The others catch a checkout on the wrong seat or a license you never wrote down. G4 matters the first time someone else opens the copy and the widgets are missing because the library lives on another login.
Receipt
Save this next to the ticket. Empty strings are yours to fill. Do not invent a price or a project name.
{
"receipt": "uefn_source_asset_lab_receipt_v1",
"date": "",
"latch": "LAB_COPY",
"live_project": "",
"copy_project": "",
"fab_account": "",
"listing": "Verse UI Kit",
"seller": "Epic",
"price": 0,
"license_sentence": "",
"resale_allowed": false,
"widget_changed": "",
"published_island": false,
"fab_upload_started": false,
"owner": ""
}
Reject the file if price is not 0, if published_island is true, if fab_upload_started is true, or if live_project equals copy_project. A receipt that says LAB_COPY and published_island: true is a contradiction. Change the latch. Do not edit the story to match the word you wanted.
The Verse and UEFN resource list is where you go when the next evening is about reading the helper library for real. This receipt is not that reading. It is proof you stopped.
Seventy-five minutes, in order
| Minutes | Do | Stop if |
|---|---|---|
| 0–10 | Section A. Name both projects and the Fab seat | You are inside the live island |
| 10–25 | Section B. Open only the free kit. Read the price | The price is not zero |
| 25–40 | Section C. Write the license sentence. Do not check out yet | Resale is unclear |
| 40–50 | Section D. Check out. Confirm the library. Do not assign a project | Checkout attached it to the live island |
| 50–70 | Section E. Add it to the copy. Change one widget. Save | You opened Publish or a Fab upload |
| 70–80 | Section F and the receipt | The sentence names a paid pack |
If you finish early, do not spend the remainder on Pathfinder, an office pack, or a Discover thumbnail. Those are later tickets. The thumbnail lock has its own date. A second listing has its own price. This form is done when it is boring.
A filled shape that is not a case study
| Blank | Example only |
|---|---|
| A1 | IslandLive |
| A3 | SandboxUI |
| A5 | [email protected] |
| B3 | 0 |
| C3 | no |
| E1 | SandboxUI |
| E3 | Changed the example button label to LAB |
| E6 | no |
| F1 | LAB_COPY |
The email is a placeholder. Use the seat you actually control. If your copy project’s name matches a shipped island, pick a new name before Section E. The pass is the relationship. A3 is not A1. The price is zero. Publish stayed closed.
What failure looks like on the same table: A3 copied from A1, B3 left blank because the button said Get, E6 yes because the example screen “looked finished.” That is LIVE_ISLAND. Write it down. Do not relist the screen to make the mistake educational.
Mistakes that look like progress
Adding the kit to the live project because the copy is empty. Empty is the right starting point. You are proving an add, not shipping a menu.
Restyling five screens. One label is the lab. A full reskin is a design task that belongs on a branch after you know the license. It also tempts a Fab upload.
Opening the seller flow “to see 88 percent.” The share applies when you sell work you made or have the rights to sell. The seller screens are not a preview mode. Close them.
Using a teammate’s checkout and your project. If D2 is yes only on their account, your copy may not travel. Either check out on the seat in A5 or write their seat in A5 and accept that they hold the library.
Treating the example settings panel as your game UI. Epic said you may use the kit as is, restyle it, or read it. Players still need a loop that is yours before anyone publishes. This lab does not build that loop.
Solving October 22 inside this hour. You will not finish safe-area thumbnails and a license sentence together. The stills are a different owner and a different ticket.
Skipping C because the what-changed article already summarized the kit. The listing can be tighter than a news post. Your sentence has to match the listing you clicked, not the paragraph you remember.
How this sits next to the other pages
Use the what-changed article when someone asks what a source asset is, or what 88 percent applies to. Use the finished-island article when someone wants to publish the pack as the game. Use the Discover lock when the next click is a real update and the calendar is past the thumbnail date. Use this worksheet when nobody has completed a free checkout on purpose.
Do not merge them into one evening. A team that buys a room, publishes the island, and uploads a logo they cropped from the Fab page has done three jobs badly. The pass here is one free kit, one widget, no publish.
Key takeaways
- The October 15, 2026 source-asset flow is license, library, then add to a project. This lab stops before publish.
- LAB_COPY means the free Verse UI Kit on a project that is not your live island.
- Confirm the price is 0 and the seller matches Epic’s kit. A paid pack is HOLD, not a shortcut.
- Write a license sentence before checkout. Free is not a resale right. Do not upload the kit as your own Fab product.
- Checkout should land in the Fab library on a named account before any project gets the asset.
- Add the kit only to the copy. Change one widget or one label. Open one Verse file if you want proof it is editable source.
- Do not click Creator Portal publish. Do not start a Fab listing. Do not make Discover thumbnails in this sitting.
- The receipt is invalid if the price is not zero, the two project names match, or
published_islandis true. - Eighty-eight percent is a later seller question. It is not a button in this lab.
- Stop at about eighty minutes. Pathfinder, environment packs, and the October 22 art lock are other tickets.
FAQ
Do I have to buy something to learn the Fab source-asset flow?
No. This lab uses Epic’s free Verse UI Kit. If the listing in front of you has a price, close it and find the free kit. Do not pay to rehearse.
Can I add the kit to the live island if I promise not to publish?
No. The live project is the one this form keeps clean. A promise is not a project boundary. Use a copy, even if the copy is an empty UEFN project you created today.
What counts as the one edit?
A change you can name. A button label, a color, or a string on an example toast. Restyling the whole kit, rewriting the helper library, or placing the example menu as your front end is outside the lab.
What if checkout added the asset to the wrong project?
Note the project in Section D and stop. If it is the live island and you have not placed widgets into the level players use, remove the add before you do anything else. If players already depend on those widgets, do not delete them in the same hour. Mark LIVE_ISLAND and get a second person.
Can I publish the copy so friends can see the button?
Not in this lab. Publish is the fail. A local edit is the pass. Friends can wait until a project that is actually your game is ready, with its own license check and its own Discover files.
Is the Verse UI Kit okay to sell if I recolor it?
Only if the listing you accepted says you have that right. This worksheet expects the answer no. Epic’s seller rule is that you publish work you made or have the rights to sell. A recolor is not automatically that right.
Does this lab satisfy the October 22 thumbnail requirement?
No. You are not uploading portraits, a landscape, or a transparent logo here. Those files are a separate lock with their own date.
What do I do the next evening if the receipt passed?
Read the helper library on the copy, or decide whether a paid listing deserves its own license sentence. Do not skip straight to Publish on the live island because the free lab felt easy.
What to do next
Copy Sections A through F into a ticket and fill them on the free kit. Attach the receipt with published_island false and price 0.
If the price is not zero, stop with HOLD. Reading the what-changed page is the useful substitute. Buying an environment so the evening “wasn’t wasted” is not the substitute.
When the receipt is honest, you have earned a conversation about using the kit in a real menu. That conversation still starts from the license sentence, and it still does not happen by publishing the copy you just saved.
